Name: James Raymond Grayson
Nicknames: Jim, Ray, Grayson, Harry, Mack, You Evil Bastard.
Date of birth/age: 2nd May 1977. 35.
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Demisexual
Job: Hitman
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance:
Tom Hiddleston (on stilts)
Six feet and seven inches tall, this man is as thin as the proverbial rake. The sharp angles of his pale-skinned face accentuate large eyes of cold, pale blue, and high cheekbones and hollow cheeks lend him a brooding air. His hair is jet black with receding temples and streaks of silver, kept short enough to stand on end without apparent human intervention. The rest of his body follows the elongated, slender and angular rule; his limbs are long, his fingers are dextrous, and there's little spare fat on him.
Today, Grayson wears neat black trousers and a pair of worn-into-comfort boots, along with a black T-shirt with the pattern of a stylised serpent's head in black gloss. The buckle on his knotworked leather belt is in the image of a serpent's head. Over the top of his clothing in inclement weather he wears a trenchcoat, jet black with a purple satin lining, tailored and proportioned so that it will flare out behind him as he walks. A slender silver chain carries a pendant that remains tucked beneath his shirt.
Personality:
There are three 'personalities' that others see; all the same man, but differing facets.
The man that most people meet is intelligent, bright, bold and sharp. He carries himself well, with style and flair, and is adept at seeing problems and helping people find ways around them. He laughs and jokes, and while his sense of humour may be a little morbid he can and will turn a cartwheel in the street just to see a child smile - although his own smile doesn't warm his eyes quite as much as it should.
The man without the mask is cold-hearted, vicious and sadistic. His choice of nightclub is one where black leather is de rigeur, and he makes no bones about being there to cruise for prey. Above all things, though, his driving urge is for freedom; he neither wants to tie himself down to a single partner nor get arrested for what he's done, and he has self-control enough that flight will rule over fight where that is a risk. He's cunning, manipulative and generally devious.
Finally, the man that only his closest friends and small children see is kind, gentle and incredibly protective of them (and only them). He may hiss at his friends and hope they take the hint, but he will never bite unless the consequences of not doing so are worse.
Strengths:
Grayson's instincts are his greatest strength; he's guided by them, and trusts them implicitly. He's also highly intelligent and not exactly bound by a moral code. He can explode into action at the drop of a hat, and modify his plans on the fly to account for changing situations and circumstances. Most of the world's population are viewed as either things to run from or potential food; those who've earned his friendship and/or loyalty have a privileged place in his heart. He can be charismatic when he chooses to be, and is very, very good at lying.
Weaknesses:
Grayson's instincts are also his greatest weakness. They can be turned against him, and when he has to go against his instincts he's forced to fight himself. He's not quite as bright as he thinks he is; he jumps to elaborate (and frequently incorrect) conclusions based on the evidence available, and things usually start to go wrong when he gets bored. He moves towards anger very swiftly, and when his rage - or his fear - is triggered, becomes little more than an animal.
History:
Some people are born bad, some descend into evil down a path of good intentions, and some have an event in their past that changes everything. It's difficult to say which led to the entity known as Grayson, since he rarely talks about the past, and even then it's only with his closest friends. What's undeniable are the results - a man who seems charming, suave and sophisticated, and yet carries with him a hint of unsettling wrongness.
Grayson was born in England, to loving parents. He had a mostly-happy childhood, though they were not rich. Something went wrong at the age of eight, though, and a happy, carefree child turned sullen and bitter, gaining the cynicism of a man in his forties and a strange sort of maturity with it.
Young Jim became 'other'; he withdrew from the circle of his peers as they withdrew from him, and he became a loner, but only rarely a victim. His temper became legend, along with his willingness to fight. Two schools later he was sent to boarding school, where he did a little better until he was old enough to leave school and work, which he promptly did.
London's Soho district probably wasn't the best place to have started, but it suited the youngster. He didn't so much fall in with the wrong crowd as jump in headlong, and after beginning a career as a legbreaker moved up through the ranks into more senior territory. Natural talent demonstrated itself, along with aptitude, and he became a hitman. A few good hits later he managed to avoid getting retired when the rest of his gang did, and decided to make a new life for himself in a new city.
New York was perfect, and it was while he was living the high life in New York five years ago that he caught what he thought was a cold and soon decided was the flu. When he sneezed himself into a serpent, though, he realised that actually, it was Something Else.
Whoops.
Adapting took time. Learning to make the most of his new abilities took a lot of effort, but he persevered in the full and certain knowledge that it would be worth it - and that if he didn't, he was dead. And now, after a successful career in New York, it's time to move on. Miami sounds good. Palm trees, warmth even in winter, and something about the place that sparks people to write about homicides, vice and serial killers - it's a joke that almost writes itself.
How could it not be intriguing?
✓►SHIFTER◄
Species: Adder
Group: Reptiles
Conservation status: Least Concern
Appearance: Ssssss!
Abilities: Grayson's strength and stamina are a little above average for a shifter, but his reflexes are fast almost beyond belief. Most of his senses are only a little sharper than human, but he has gained an extra sense for vibrations around him. As a result, he's a very, very difficult man to sneak up on, and he enjoys nightclubs, gigs, motorbikes and powerful jet engines at a whole new level.
