Name: Maureen Garrett-Schmitt
Nicknames: Tiger, Shark, Mommy Dearest, Malificent
Date of birth/age: A lady never tells
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Ambiguous
Job: Criminal Defense Attorney
Degrees/Permits: Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology
Licensed to practice in both New York and Florida
Languages Spoken: English, French, a bit of Russian and Italian and a smattering of many others (just enough to make people worry generally.)
Human or shifter: Human
Appearance:
PB: Dita Von Teese
Maureen looks... perfect. Although not without a lot of work. Her hair is naturally blonde, but she keeps it dyed black. She takes a great deal of care with her diet and exercise to maintain her hourglass figure. She might be over forty, but you'd never guess, thanks to good genetics, good luck and taking good care of herself. Even without her makeup she doesn't look much over thirty.
Personality: Maureen's isn't exactly a nice person. Well, that's a bit of a simplification. Maureen can be a very nice woman. She just generally isn't. She loves animals and children and especially her son. She's very fond of giving gifts and pampering those she believes deserve pampering. She gives money to just about every animal charity out there, and charities for children.
But trying to get her to help anyone who's over 18 without being paid for it is like trying to get blood from a stone. Because while she might love children and animals, she tends not to like people very much.
She has her own issues (she might not see race but she sure as hell sees class) but she has a special disdain for anyone who blames where they are on something like their gender. Because in her opinion you don't stand for that. You kick in the door and make them accept you.
She's worked hard to get where she is and the only things that she generally sees as valuable are beauty and knowledge, because those are the only things that can get you power.
It boils down to the fact that she's a wonderful, loving mother, a generous lover with a complex relationship with her husband and a very smart woman... and She's sarcastic and snarky and an ice cold monster, who's gotten people she knows are killers back on the street because that's her job thank you. And yes, she sleeps just fine at night.
Strengths:
~Beautiful (She works at it, and it certainly is a strength, and she's happy to use it as a weapon)
~Intelligent. Maureen was top of her class and keeps up with the literature and it shows. She's one of the top lawyers in the state in her field and she's earned her reputation.
~Knows the law. Deserves it's own mention. Maureen is very well acquainted with the law. And allll the lovely little loopholes it contains.
~Rich. Maureen comes from a line of fortune hunting women and she's got a rather impressive personal fortune, as well as her shared finances with her husband.
~Well Connected. Alll sorts of people owe Maureen little... favors.
~Ambitious. Maureen has plans and goals, and you're going to have to work hard to keep her from accomplishing them.
~Confident. She's very self assured. She knows she's beautiful, powerful and intelligent and she knows she can do anything she puts her mind to.
Weaknesses: She knows she has them, and she does her best to compensate. But that doens't mean she always succeeds...
~Her son. Maureen's one, huge, gaping weakness walks and talks and is named Simon Garrett. Maureen would both kill and die for her child and threatening him is an excellent way to make her both mad and stupid.
~Maureen's a good lawyer, but that doesn't mean she always wins. If you murder someone in front of a video camera and fifteen witnesses there's only so much she can do. So making her lose won't hurt her, it'll just make her a bit annoyed. But any actual threats to her career are treated the same way the US deals with national security threats. The idea of being disbarred is enough to give her nightmares.
~Tom. The one real friend she has. The man she might have married (and who her mother wanted her to marry) and one of the few people on the planet who's wellbeing she puts before her own. He's on the same level as Simon when it comes to 'People Maureen Does Not Want You To Mess With'.
~Her ego. Or more specifically how she feels about her intelligence. You can insult Maureen all you like. She mostly considers it a compliment, since it means she's gotten you to drop to that point. But actually making her look stupid is an entirelly different matter.
~Wha happened to her. Maureen doesn't talk about what happened that night in college. Ever. Only three people alive know anything happened at all. She's worked hard to put it all behind her. But if someone manages the difficult task of triggering those memories, she goes from Queen of the World to sobbing wreck huddled in the corner of the room.
~Gardening. Maureen loves flowers and green and growing things. But she has a black thumb when it comes to gardening. She can't even keep grass alive on her own.
History:
Maureen was born in New York City on Valentine's Day of 1965, to an Irish-American mother and a Jewish father. She was the product of what is best described as a self imposed breeding program, courtesy of the women on her mother's side, designed to produce... well... the perfect woman. By their definition of perfection. A woman capable of taking over the world. Her mother, like her grandmother and great grandmother could be described as a fortune hunter. Or a Black Widow, depending on who you ask.
As a young girl, Maureen was taught what her sisters were taught and what her mother had been taught. Only two things matter in the world, for any woman. Beauty and knowledge. Because those could get you anything else you wanted. By the time she was ready for college, she'd seen her father get left behind and replaced by four stepfathers, and her mother's fortune increase significantly, as well as her own trust fund.
Maureen's life had been planned from a young age. By her. And she took to college like a fish to water. With her pet rat Machiavelli in tow, she set to work ensuring she'd graduate at the top of her class and build the start of a reputation that would earn her the title of Shark Queen.
She'd never been ashamed of her flexible sexuality. She was attracted, not to gender, but to beauty, in any form it might take. It was while she was out with a very attractive med student, on a rare night away from her studies, that That Night happened. She was ambushed as she was coming out of the bar. Years later, she still won't talk about it.
But Maureen wasn't going to let anything stop her. Without saying a word to her family, she dove into her studies and found herself a therapist.
It was in college that she met her future husband. It was also there that they worked out their marrigage. It would be best described as a carefully worded business contract. They recognized in each other a possibility for advancement.
Once she left college and with Douglas in tow, Maureen set about making a name for herself in the New York law community. It was there that she met the man who would become her best friend (and the man her mother regularly attempted to pester her into marrying). Tom was a fellow lawyer and they got along well, in an affectionately adversarial relationship. Once Maureen smiled, smirked and blackmailed her way into an impressive reputation, the pair set out to form their own firm. It was there that Maureen earned her title as one of the best defense attorneys in the state.
But it wasn't an instant thing, not by any means, especially with the interuption that the birth of her son brought. At the age of 31, Maureen gave birth to Simon Garrett, and was both pleased and disappointed. Pleased that she had someone to carry on her family line. Disappointed because she'd hoped for a daughter. But she loved him, adored him and proved to be a good mother in her own unique way.
But even the best lawyers can't win every case. And during the midst of the Versi outbreak, she lost one. One that no defense attorney could have been expected to win. And her son suffered for it. Even after the men responsible had been dealt with, that didn't change the fact that her son was now a shifter.
She wasn't going to let that change anything though. Well. Much of anything. Quite calmly, she picked up the family, and moved them south, to be closer to her friend, and Simon's godfather. After all, her money making enterprises could be just as easily run from Miami and the family did need a change of scenery. They took up full time residence in their summer homes there and she set about making sure she lived up to her reputation in the new setting.
