Name: Thomas Edmund Lyons
Nicknames: Doc, Tomcat, Scar, Rex.
Date of birth/age: 55, born March 14th, 1956.
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Demisexual, leaning more towards those who identify as female.
Job: Lawyer, starting to specialize in cases relating to shifters.
Degrees/Permits: Bachelor of Arts, Juris Doctor, Master of Laws, Doctor of Juridical Science.
Languages Spoken: English
Human or shifter: Shifter.
Appearance:
PB is Gary Oldman. Same height, weight, and build. Aged rather gracefully, or at least it seems that way. His eyes are an odd blue that's almost black, and most of the time his hair's silver or grey. His throat is scarred in a way that'd suggest that it had almost been completely ripped out at one point, and has a wide scar running the length of his spine.
Wardrobe-wise, tends to stick to suits in polite company and at work. He prefers dark blues and greys, and even though he's slightly timid about people staring at the scars on his neck, he doesn't wear turtlenecks. At all. He opts for scarves in the right weather instead. He often chooses a lighter coloured tie, mostly in purple, and has as many black, light grey, and dark grey dress shirts as he has white ones. At home he dresses similarly but suit jackets are replaced by vests and sometimes he even wears armbands. Whatever he's wearing, he always wears a pocketwatch with it.
Personality: Tom is the very definition of an old nobleman. Regardless of where he was born, he believes himself to be a knight without a knighthood, and carries himself thus. He believes in honour and justice and ruthlessly tries to uphold both whenever either seem to be at risk. He's incredibly protective of those close to him and blames his losses on the fact that he just wasn't there in time or didn't have the expertise to stop them.
Over time the term kids has expanded to everyone close to him, mostly because of his age. He does his best to carry a "guardian" role at all times, even dipping into the realm of grandfatherly with people above him when he deems it appropriate. Though just because he's gone a touch soft doesn't mean he's gone all the way. He's heard himself compared to a bulldog before, and he certainly supports the claim. He's incredibly determined, and once he receives a task, he'll complete it to the letter no matter the method he has to use (as long as the method is legal).
He absolutely delights in making someone think he's a weak, foolish, old house cat before snapping around and proving the exact opposite. It's a tactic that's almost always worked for him, so why not use it? It takes a bit for Tom to trust someone, but he tries his hardest to return that trust as much as he can. Give him a command and he'll follow it enthusiastically to the letter if you've earned his respect, tell him a secret and he'll take it to the grave. On the flip side, he's just as quick to hold a grudge and will probably take most of those to his grave as well.
Strengths:
-Loyal to a fault. He also tries to prove this fact often.
-Incredibly clever. He wouldn't be a good lawyer without that trait, now would he?
-Driven. Give him a goal, and he will try to accomplish it, even if he has to try a thousand different ways.
-Very good at chess, though he hasn't played in a while.
-Slightly above-average memory, especially when it comes to law and history. Often memorizes things when he writes them down.
-He's kind of a wizard with an iron/steam cleaner. It's taken him 40 years to master it.
-Agile in combat. He has forty years' worth of training in fencing to thank for that.
Weaknesses:
-Stubborn. It often takes a verbal or physical whack to the back of the head to get him to change his mind.
-Often very single-minded.
-More than a little bit bloodthirsty. Relatively speaking of course.
-Often very blunt (and for lack of a better term, short) with people. It's gotten him into a lot of trouble before.
-Sometimes his imagination and bravado get the better of him.
-Damaged. He can't speak very loudly or lie flat without some small measure of pain due to his injuries.
History: Born in New York City as one of three children, Tom learned how to keep order among his younger brothers from an early age. The brothers three imagined they were knights, defending their home from some sort of imminent, looming threat. The younger two, Harold and John, were focused on physical fights while Tom himself was more keen on outwitting his unseen 'enemy'. The boys kept up that attitude until their teens, when they started to pick up interests in different things. John preferred football, Harold was more interested in fooling around, but Tom... Tom never lost sight of that noble, chivalrous ideal. He picked up swordsmanship when the other two picked up team sports, studied history and law when John and Harold leaned toward arts and sciences.
He was more keen on being a police officer than being a lawyer at first. Getting out on the streets, facing criminals, and hey, they even got to ride horses sometimes. Besides, his father was a police officer, so he'd know how to get into it, right? The uniforms weren't exactly as cool as a suit of armour, but he'd manage. He was definitely, definitely set on following in his father's footsteps. ...When Tom was 19, his father died in action. That dream died with him, and Tom turned to another path. The path of the lawyer. Defending the innocent with his mind is exactly what he wanted to do, even if he kind of wanted the physical aspect involved in police work.
While at university, he met his future wife. Soon after graduation (1983) they married and Tom took a job at a small firm. Everything went absolutely fine, and she even gave birth to twins. Tom furthered his education a bit more while his daughters grew, gaining his Master's degree and finally his Doctorate in the mid 90s. His daughters were in university and living on their own by the time his wife passed away in 2005 from heart complications. Tom, distraught with the memories New York brought him, moved to Miami in order to cope with his grief.
He was among the infected in late 2007, despite his efforts not to catch it. A small cat? What would Maureen think? What would his own cat, Bartholemew think? He soldiered on, regardless. He was thinking of retiring, and almost did in 2008. A year after that, he met his first anti-shifter group. They didn't take too kindly to him either, overwhelming him and leaving him bleeding on the pavement. It was his healing factor that had saved him that night, and it was a lucky break that it had saved his voice as well. He would have found the bastards himself, but he stayed back until the police did the job. He didn't want his anger to get the better of him. He even had to phone a friend to help with the prosecution. Tom didn't want to, of course, since it would technically be a favour and thus him losing a point in their little 'war', but his need to see justice done won out in the end and so did they. It just bugs him that he hasn't fully paid off that favour yet.
✓►SHIFTER◄
Species: Sand Cat (Felis margarita)
Group: Mammals
Conservation status: Near Threatened
Appearance:
Abilities: Out of everything, Tom's hearing and sight have increased the most. Sometimes when he concentrates enough, he can pick up on vibrations in the ground, provided he's not surrounded by them. A busy street? No. A nearly empty house? Yes. A good amount of time this is a strength, but it also has it's drawbacks. Incredibly loud, high, or off-key noises can cause physical pain and headaches that can last for hours. He's also gained an acute sensitivity to respiratory infections. With his throat in the state it is, he's prone to staying home whenever there's a flu going around.
