Name: Odette Cygnus Advaire
Nicknames: Detty, Cygnet, Pretty bird
Date of birth/age: 5-7-1992/ 19, generally appears about 16
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Bisexual, with a preference for women
Job: Dancer at the Miami City Ballet
Degrees/Permits: None
Languages Spoken: English, French, Italian and Russian
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance: PB: Kiira Korpi
‘Doll like’ is the term that generally comes to mind when looking at Odette. Petite, with delicate features, and an almost waifish build, she does not generally /appreciate/ the comparison. Despite the rather cultured appearance of frailty, she is very much an athlete and spending time with her reveals that most of her weight is solid muscle, a trait she shares with most ballerinas. Her hair light, honey blond, generally kept up in a bun or a pair of braids and her eyes are bright blue. The webbing between her fingers and toes is longer than usual, and she’s grateful that’s only noticeable upon closer examination.
Personality: Odette, despite the image she occasionally works to project, is a complex person. She’s incredibly driven and determined and has devoted her life to the goal of becoming a prima ballerina. For years, her entire life has revolved around the pursuit of that goal. But she’s not just a ballet dancing robot. She’s very feminine and loves a myriad of ‘girly’ things, lace and frills and pink and all things pretty and shiny. She’s devoted to her family, both biological and adopted, and she adores her fellow shifter, simply because they’re /her/ people.
She also doesn’t hesitate to use her sweet exterior to hide the fact that she can be a bit of a bitch at times, and she takes a certain sort of pleasure in insulting people with a pretty little smile on her face. Her sweetness is entirely genuine though, and she likes enveloping others in her world. She’s very protective of her friends and does whatever she can to keep them from harm, which occasionally conflicts with her own intense drive for personal success.
She often comes off as superior to those that don’t know her, and even to those who do. She makes it very clear that she thinks she is going to be the best ballerina out there and her friends are the best friends. She's not always vocal about it, but she's frequently dismissive of differing opinions.
Odette is also something of a merry prankster. They’re generally harmless, but occasionally they get a bit cruel if she’s dealing with someone she doesn’t like. She’s a bright girl, and grew up being homeschooled with a bunch of siblings and cousins so creative pranks were one of her favorite ways to get attention. This is also where her love of matchmaking and gift giving comes from, growing up with a big, cheerful family, who were all very invested in certain areas of each other’s lives.
Despite the big, cheerful family, Odette never really had a childhood, and this sometimes expresses itself in the form of a certain childlike innocence. She likes swings and being read to and dreams, when she’s not dreaming of being a world famous ballerina, of a family that loves her for her, not for her talent.
Strengths: ~Ballet. Odette is a /very/ good ballerina. She takes full advantage of her preternatural strength and healing to push herself to be the best, and is able to do things most human ballerinas can’t because of this.
~Determined: If Odette wants something, she’s going to do her best to find a way to get it.
~Self-confidence. Odette knows she’s pretty, and she knows she’s a good ballet dancer, and it is very difficult to shake her faith in these things.
~Self-Discipline. Odette has discipline you could bend steel around, and if she puts her mind to something, very little can dissuade her from the path. She will work through pain, exhaustion and hunger if she has to, without complaining. (A fact she shares with her sister)
~Strong. Like most ballerinas, Odette is strong for her size, even for a shifter. The constant exercise has given her a lot of muscle.
~Good with languages. She currently speaks Russian, French, Italian and German, all of which she learned as a child, with plans to use them to further her career as a ballerina.
~Sewing. Odette was taught to sew at a young age, in the hopes it would give her something to fall back on after her ballet career ended, and she occasionally makes her own clothes, as well as creating things as presents for others.
Weaknesses: ~Vanity. Not just about her appearance. But about her talent as a ballerina (She is absolutely certain she is /destined/ to be a prima ballerina and will work herself to death to get there) and about how wonderful swans are in general.
~Opinionated. Odette has her opinions, and she’ll stick by them, unless proven utterly and completely /wrong/. Swans are the best, England is the best and her friends are the best, and anyone saying otherwise had better be ready for a debate at best.
~Difficulty relaxing. Unless Odette has actually set herself the /goal/ of relaxing, she finds it almost impossible to do so. In her mind, if she has free time she has things to /do/, things to practice and learn! Why waste time sitting around?
~Hot tempered. While she is generally quick to forgive and her anger fades as quickly as it comes, it's not all that hard to get her riled up outside of her practicing.
~Not much in the way of practical skills, beyond cooking and sewing. Helpless when it comes to cleaning, yard work, repairs and most electronics.
~ Odette, like many dancers, is competitive. If she doesn’t consider a fellow dancer a threat, she’s very sweet and can be honestly helpful. But if she /does/ consider them a threat, she transforms from her usual sweet self into a manipulative ice queen. Because she /will/ be the best and she doesn’t care who she has to crush to get there.
History:
For generations, both the Advaire and Kozlov families had had an interest in the ballet and performing arts, but turned their attention to more practical matters. They settled for naming their children after the characters in ballet and saving their money for infrequent trips to see shows. Odette's mother and father decided to change that.
Odette and her fraternal twin Giselle were the second children to be born, after her parents put this plan into action. Along with their siblings and cousins, they were given the choice at a very young age, to learn either gymnastics or ballet. Both girls chose ballet.
Odette and her twin began their ballet training at the age of four, along with a number of their cousins. Their family was large and loving, but also quite intensely /driven/.
All the children were homeschooled, and grew up very involved in one another’s lives, competing against each other for attention and praise. Their education covered subjects such as languages that might help them, all the children learning Italian, French, Russian and German from an early age, and sewing, which they all learned, but was oddly deficient in areas not related to their future careers.
While Odette’s twin Giselle focused on a more contemporary style, Odette’s own focus was on classical and neo-classical, with her parents taking full advantage of the increased strength that came when Odette contracted Versi at the age of thirteen to both push her harder and to encourage her to push /herself/ harder. Odette began training to dance en-pointe at the age of ten, and promptly fell in love with the feeling of flying and it made her love her shifted form when she got sick.
While the large family was safe in their little town, and well regarded, if considered a bit eccentric, it was accepted as fact that someday all of the children would go off to pursue careers in their chosen field. Becoming anything less than the best was considered entirely unacceptable, and Odette took that to heart. Setting her eyes on the Miami City Ballet. Odette moved to Miami at the age of 16 to begin her career.
She lived with Sig, a friend (...sort of) of her father's, and took up part time residence in a long abandoned family property, the Lir Estate, setting to work repairing it between near constant practice.
