Name: Warren Chance Houlihan
Nicknames: Tyto, Featherbrain, Chase, Screech
Date of birth/age: October 4th, 1976. 35.
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Pansexual
Job: Air Traffic Controller
Degrees/Permits: Private pilot certificate (ASEL [airplane, single-engine, land]), BA in English, Control Tower Operator Certificate
Languages Spoken: English, basic written Spanish.
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance:
PB: Tom Hardy
Standing at a fairly average 5'9", Warren's weight and build are fairly impressive by certain modern standards. He's mostly muscle, leading most to guess that he has a career as a bouncer or fighter of some sort. He doesn't exactly look the type to be sitting behind a desk in a control tower at an airport, which usually gets a chuckle out of him whenever someone mentions it. His eyes are a dark brown and his hair matches. In the way of scars or tattoos, he doesn't have many other than a slightly gnarled ankle due to being attacked by a stray dog when he was little and a pair of wings similar to those on an aviator badge on his back. He doesn't often sunburn unless he's out for hours without sunblock, and tans very easily.
His dress sense is incredibly eclectic. Mostly casual, with a few good suits here and there. He's partial to bright colours and light fabrics, only possessing darker blacks and blues due to them being more staple wardrobe pieces. Whenever he feels like or has to wear a darker colour, he'll usually pair it with something either pastel or bright enough to make your eyes bleed. He does try to keep up with the times, but he's often fallen behind. ... Falling as far back as the late seventies/early eighties sometimes.
Personality: Warren is an incredibly laid back person. He doesn't care much for working in very large groups but if he has to he will, he doesn't mind people invading his personal space, and insults tend to slide off him like water off a duck's back. He enjoys talking and can easily carry on a conversation for hours on end, but only if someone else speaks first. There's no deep psychological reason for this, he just thinks it might be rude to interrupt if someone's lost in a train of thought. Laid back as he is, he's definitely not lazy. He takes pride in his work and usually shows up incredibly early, even if the job he has now isn't the job that he really wanted. He's very, very driven when given a task that interests him and often tries to draw completing it out a bit. Just so he can make sure he's done everything perfectly.
He's got quite a few interests, really. That's a good thing for him, because it means he's not bored too often. He really hates the feeling of being bored. Aviation and cooking are the most prominent, and he's fairly well-versed in both. There's always a new textbook to read, a new recipe to try. In fact he's considering going back to school to either become an aerospace engineer or a professional chef.
Strengths:
+ Task-oriented and driven.
+ Quite a bit smarter than he sometimes acts.
+ He doesn't get upset all that often. Only if something really gets under his skin.
+ The strengths he picked up from Versi, as explained below
+ He's athletic. Very athletic.
Weaknesses:
- Can often get too zoned in on whatever he's working on, to the point where it's almost impossible to interrupt him.
- He's a perfectionist, and if he can't get something right the first time he'll try over and over again until it's either finished the way he'd like it to be complete, or until he thinks it's absolutely hopeless.
- Becoming a bird also weakened him a bit, especially the issue with his eyesight.
- He completely flies off the handle if something manages to get to him. Hence the nickname "Screech".
- His fears tend to upset him the most. He happens to be arachnophobic, claustrophobic, and nosocomephobic (afraid of hospitals).
History: Born in Miami to a teenage mother and an unknown father, Warren's childhood was actually fairly average. At seven he was bit in the ankle by a stray dog and taken to the hospital. He's not exactly sure how his fear of hospitals developed, but he does pinpoint that trip as the root cause. Maybe it was because everything was overwhelmingly bright (ironic considering his sense of dress), maybe it was the smell of blood, maybe it was because it was so easy to get lost and oh god where were they taking him. the rest of his childhood was fairly placid. He learned to ride a bike, how to cook a few basic things, normal stuff like that.
High school was much of the same. He had a few girlfriends, a few boyfriends, got thrown into detention a few times... you know, the usual. He kept his grades high enough to be an honour student in all four years. Then it came time for the senior trip. Warren fell in love for what felt like the first time. They were going to New York City, after quite a bit of fundraising. He'd never been that close to an aeroplane before. Sure, he'd seen them up in the sky, but they always seemed so far out of his reach. From that moment on, he was obsessed with the thought of learning to fly. He hadn't really set himself up for any career after high school. He didn't have a goal. Now he did, and it felt wonderful.
After graduation, he studied and took courses, taking up a part-time job as a bouncer at a bar close to home when he was old enough. Eventually he got his private pilot license in 2001. He started studying for his commercial license immediately, taking a minor degree in English at the same time to qualify. In four years he was ready to take the test. He failed. Twice. Once due to his inability to focus on anything other than the fact that flying was going to be awesome, the other because the area he was taking the test in was far too small and had too many people in it. Naturally, he was heartbroken. He took it a little too harshly, choking his social life to death and only existing to get up and go to work until he had an interesting chat with one of the men he'd met while training for his private license. He mentioned how Miami was lacking air-traffic controllers. Warren inquired, being curious about anything to do with flight even with the weight of failure resting heavily on his shoulders.
He was already two years into the training required when Versi hit. He was infected, prompting another stay in the hospital. it cemented his fear of those places. Crowded hallways, the scent of death and sickness. He stayed where they put him, barely moving more than a few feet away unless it was an emergency. Just when things seemed to calm down, he caught sight of a spider making an awkward attempt at an exit. That's when he realized he was growing feathers. Before he really knew it (he was more focused on the fact that everything was suddenly terrifying than the fact that everything was suddenly pain) he was awkwardly running in the other direction, flapping his wings at the same time. So he'd get to fly on a regular basis after all, then.
Five years later he's a fully qualified tower operator, having scraped past the health test by the skin of his teeth. And, being a predatory bird, he also doubles as avian traffic control, scaring off any flocks of birds that've managed to find their way into his airspace, provided there's someone available to take his place while he's scaring them off.
✓►SHIFTER◄
Species: Barn Owl (Tyto alba pratincola)
Group: Birds
Conservation status: Least Concern
Appearance:
Abilities: Warren got his share of drawbacks and improvements from his beast. Better eyesight is coupled with being disoriented when adjusting to major light changes while human. He's got better upper body strength, but frailer bones. His body couldn't decide between human and avian biology and reacted negatively. He's grateful for fast healing. Very much so. Even before the virus hit him he had strong hands, but becoming a bird of prey increased that quite a bit. His hearing's also quite sharp, but other than what's described above and a shifter's basic healing abilities, he hasn't improved much at all.
