Name: Henry Theodore Thompson
Nicknames: Hank, Teddy-bear
Date of birth/age: June 5, 1989/22
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Panromantic pansexual
Job: Works at a temp agency, occasionally doing stints at call centers
Degrees/Permits: BA in English
Languages Spoken: English. Bits of Klingon, Elvish, Vulcan and Na'vi.
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance:
PB: DJ Qualls
Hank is rather short and a bit underweight thanks to a tendency to forget to feed himself. The fact that he has nothing in the way of obvious muscle, combined with a rather long and pointy nose and big ears gave the impression of a nervous rodent long before he became a shifter. He has light blue eyes, generally covered by round glasses and dark brown hair with a noticeable amount of grey. Other than that he has One piercing in his right ear, although he usually only put something in (typically a very small stud) when he’s trying to be ‘wild and crazy’, as well as a tattoo of the Starfleet logo on his left hip about the size of a quarter which he got as an 18th birthday present to himself.
Personality: At his core, Hank is a cheerful person. He might be a nervous geek who gets awkward around people he doesn’t know well, but he tries his best and does his best to have fun. He’s generally smiling (even if it is a rather anxious smile) and he focuses on finding the good in things, rather than the bad. When he /does/ find something he really enjoys, he does it with a considerable amount of enthusiasm. Since coming to Miami, he’s been a bit lonely, and even though he’s more than a bit of an introvert, he’s been trying to put himself out there. This is partially driven by his wide as a highway romantic streak, and the private hope that his fumbling attempts to find friends might lead him to his One True Love.
He’s also one of nature’s followers. He’s happy to follow orders as long as they make some degree of sense and he’d rather work alone then be in charge of a group of people. He’s not a doormat though, and if you’re asking him to do something he knows for a fact isn’t his job, he’ll try and find a polite way to tell you no. That said, he’s more than slightly clueless about the world outside his small town, and he’s bright enough to know it. Because of this, as well as his own desire to learn, he’s almost always happy to listen to others, especially if he thinks he might be able to put what he learns to use.
Strengths:
~ If Hank has one thing really going for him, it’s that he’s resilient. If you knock him down, he’s going to get back up. Maybe not right away, but he /will/ do it. When he fails, he does his best to figure out what went wrong and then he tries again.
~ He’s no super genius like his comic book idols, but he does pick things up quickly (With the glaring exception of any math above algebra level). Give him one read through of the rulebook, one thorough explanation of something and he’s generally good to go.
~ That said, Hank is a bright guy. Not people smart, or street smart really, but book smart. He has an impressive collection of trivia, a decent smattering of knowledge in a wide range of subjects (though he’s far from an expert in any of them) and he did well in school.
~ His family. They love him dearly, he knows they love him and even though he can’t bring himself to tell them about the new development in his life, he knows they support him. They send him money and letters regularly and his parents pay a good 75% of his bills.
Weaknesses: ~ He’s uncoordinated. Well, that’s the kindest way to put it. To be honest, he trips over his own feet, regularly smacks his toes, knees and elbows into whatever hard surface is available and falls up stairs. This is the main reason that despite his enthusiasm when it comes to athletic pursuits he is almost invariably /bad/ at them.
~ Unless Hank is somewhere he feels ‘powerful’ (generally behind a computer screen or with a game controller in his hand) he’s anxious. Not to a crippling level, but he /does/ tend to give the impression that he’s about three seconds from trying to flee. He’s always been a bit nervous, but it’s gotten more than a bit worse since he came to New York.
~ While he does pick up things quickly, that doesn’t translate to an ability to be /good/ at them quickly. While he’ll understand what’s going on around him, unless he’s playing a boardgame, it generally takes him a while to get good at things. Over time, this has resulted in a distinct lack of confidence in himself, and a rather low sense of self esteem.
~ Hank is a horrible liar. He has trouble coming up with a lie in the first place, and even when he manages to get one out, it’s almost painfully obvious he’s not telling the truth, what with the refusing to meet the other person’s eyes, fiddling with his glasses and stammering.
~Never learned to swim and he’s terrified of drowning. He tends to get a bit worried around any body of water bigger then a bathtub.
History: Henry Theodore Thompson was born in the town of Carroll, Nebraska, (population: 212) to a close family who all lived in the same neighborhood of the small town. They were essentially the idyllic image of a mid-western family, white picket fence and all. Hank was a bit of an odd duck. He was happy enough to play with his cousins (both about his age) but he was happier inside and reading. This didn’t change when he started going to school. Both of his cousins were vastly more popular, but he never really minded, happy for them even if he was a bit lonely.
He was bullied, but not excessively, mostly for the things any geeky kid in a small town in love with sports would be bullied for as well as his hair, which started to go grey at fourteen. It got a bit worse as he got older and his distinct in-aptitude for athletics made itself more obvious, and he never really had many close friends, opting instead to spend time with his family and the acquaintances he picked up. He’s never so much as held hands with someone who wasn’t directly related to him, and for Senior Prom, after he’d avoided every other school dance, they got his cousin Meagan to go with him, which resulted in both of them standing against the wall looking awkward. He did well in school, with the rather glaring exception of math, which he did his best to avoid and he did his best to blend in with everyone around him.
He went to college early, and got Versi while he was there. Once he figured out what happened, he worked hard and got his BA and then set out to try and find someone who could help him figure out what to do. It didn’t go very well. He ended up encountering rather a lot of predators, most of which tried to eat him. He kept moving south, and eventually ended up in Miami, where he settled, mostly because no one’s tried to eat him yet.
