Mid morning, and he could already tell it was going to be obscenely muggy. Still, of all the places he could be spending his day, the Kampong wasn't so bad. It wasn't the largest or most impressive of the National Tropical Botanical Gardens, but it was a little oasis of calm and beauty tucked away on the Southern edge of metropolitan Miami that most of the locals didn't even know existed.
Perhaps he'd take a trip to the Hawaiian islands one of these days to go visit the others. For now, Loren was content to wander through the landlocked botanical garden on an independent tour of his own.
He'd purposefully picked a day when one of the guided tours weren't making their rounds through the Kampong, so the campus was fairly empty. So much the better; Loren was armed with a backpack of botanical books, sunscreen, and plenty of water. One of these books was perpetually in hand, though at the moment, he was studying one particularly fantastic specimen- a commanding 20 foot tall ylang-ylang tree just east of the Fairchild-Sweeny House.

Eva had fancied a day filled with exotic flowers so she'd come by the Kampong for a stroll. Too bad it was too hot to bring Magdalena along! She loved her pocket pet, and often carried her around in her purse. Magdalena was unusually calm for a mouse, and seemed not only not to mind the trips, but to enjoy them. Alas, she was tiny and thus that much more sensitive to the weather, and the heat would be too brutal today for Eva to want her little angel to risk. Luckily, Eva was the type of person who could always find company no matter where she was, as evident by right now, when she smiled at the young man who was staring at the tree she was walking up to now. Spotting the little sign in front of it that labeled it as ylang ylang, she realized that she'd heard of it, and remarked to the guy,
"Isn't it neat how the flowers almost look like flat little bananas? My mom uses it in aromatherapy. The oil, that is. I hear it makes great perfume, too!"
She inhaled,
"It smells kind of...jasmine-y, what do you think?"
