Entry 1: Unusual. Contains: An immature amount of swearing. ( Privacy Settings: Friends-Only. )
-
Writing this while kinda buzzed, so you all been warned there. But I was closing up the place tonight and I just started thinking on shit, and mind got to wandering, and next thing you know I'm home typing this shit up.
So.
What if someone was a human shifter?
Not like. Dog picks up Versi and suddenly can turn into something else.
Though that always surprised me a bit, really. That you don't see active Versi jumping the species lines like all that. Vectors, that kinda shit.
Sure, you had some birds or whatever maybe dropping dead at the peak of shit, but far as I know they still ain't pinned down nothing that were a major agent on it all. Mostly just humans spreading it to other humans, yeah?
That kinda shit's pretty unusual, for a disease.
For a disease what went pandemic and all, at least. Even if you ignore the whole 'turning into animals what the fuck is going on here anyway' Kafka-esqueness, it's unusual.
That kinda spread on something usually takes assistance. From bugs or rats or pigs or birds or whatfucking ever else in Old McDonald's barn pulls the old unlucky short straw.
But then, nothing about Versi's ever been real usual. Called it a flu, but it ain't, not really. Not what little I can tell from the articles and shit, at least.
Something takes out a full three percent of humanity and folks start sprouting ears and tails like they accidentally wandered onto that freaky furry episode of CSI - scientists're gonna get interested. Been more published on this thing than on cancer and AIDS combined these days, I figure. Well. Maybe not quite, but it sure seems like it some days, flipping through the news sites.
I know part of it's just the media. No denying that shit sells magazines. Pop science. All derisive. Like I really wanna wade my way through a real fucking research journal on my lunch break.
But I'm wandering and the point still stands: this shit's got attention.
Which is why I know I can't be the only one what ever wondered why you don't hear on human shifters.
Think on it. We're just animals, yeah? Homo fucking sapiens.
Evolution, prehistoric man, all that good old shit what gets creationists riled up and spitting venom. So how come we got folks turning into bats and rats and fucking cuttlefish on us and we don't got anyone getting more just plain human?
Wouldn't be able to tell on them just shifting none, I figure. Me, some shit goes and triggers it - you're gonna fucking notice. I'm gonna fucking notice, because holy balls there's a coyote where that guy was standing just now what the hell.
But them, maybe they get that same shuddering. Maybe shit starts to feel off and warped and weird and off for them...but then it passes. And they're normal. And they're still human.
And they think 'wow, that was weird' and get back to beating off at their desk jobs or pushing their kid's stroller around the park or walking their dog or whatever else it is that they do.
And they never even know.
And maybe as time goes on, maybe they start to notice they feel like they're more human than everyone else around them. Than they ever were before.
Maybe they're solving problems in all kinda new ways they never thought on. Maybe they're analyzing their language and all and the way they interact with folks and they're just seeing all kinds of shit what we'd never even notice.
Maybe they get this new, this incredible insight on it all.
Like when you're stoned out your skull and some thought just comes to you, and they all line up and make sense. Only instead of dumb pothead bullshit like 'man, you ever really looked at your hands?' you're looking at your hands and actually understanding some greater cosmic truth about the way hands make us human. The way that they help to make us who we are.
Course, no one would ever believe you, because what the fuck you're not shifting into nothing go away.
Figure even if you got someone to test you and they found something, they'd just wave you off as having an immunity or some shit.
Someone would tick a box and your healthcare costs'd skyrocket because fuck knows insurance will do anything they can to screw you over if you got even the slightest signs of Versi, and no one would ever believe you.
Maybe even you wouldn't believe you.
But sometimes that spark, that flash of understanding'd still come.
And you'd know.
