Nicknames: J, Jo (if you're very close to him), Mr. J, Mr. Rudaski
Date of birth/age: 09/28/1973 - 38
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Homosexual
Job: Biology high school teacher
Degrees/Permits: High school diploma, bachelor of science degree in biology with education emphasis, teaching certification.
Languages Spoken: English, Dutch (enough to get into trouble and he swears all the photographs of that vacation have been destroyed, German (dated a German guy for about a year in college, most of that isn't suitable for polite conversation).
Human or shifter: Human
Appearance:
PB: Brian Keane
Johan is, for lack of better terms, a bear. Big, cuddly, hairy and squishy around the middle and, well, all over to be honest. He has a beard, hasn't been without one in well over ten years. His haircut varies between shaved bald and short military style. When at work, he tends towards wearing suits, minus the tie. He hates having things around his neck. When at home, he changes into jeans and T-shirts and his comfy socks. If Paul hasn't tossed his comfy socks into the washing machine.
Personality: Johan is the quiet type, silently happy in the background, perfectly content with playing the supporting role for a while. He might come across as a touch stern, but he's a big ol' daddy. He'll keep others' feet firmly on the ground and knock others into the ground if they mess with his people and his kids. He's the kind of person people can go to with their troubles and he'll let them talk and complain without judging and then work on a solution with them.
Agency and control are very important to him, but don't misunderstand him. He's not a controlfreak. His aim is to make sure that people are in control of themselves and have a say in what happens to them, though at times that means guiding people to a point where they can make those decisions for themselves safely without harming themselves or other around them. He will, for example, not be happy with teens left to their own devices because they're not ready for that kind of responsibility. Their brains are literally still years and years away from developing the ability to account for consequences of their actions.
He operates with three rules in the classroom:
Disobedience will end up in punishment and, if anything, years in the educational system have left Johan with a wide arsenal of creative punishments.
Outside of his classroom, with his friend of significant other, he's a calm, gentle and loving man. He'll be happy to spend the evening cuddled up with someone and watching bad movies or, well, anything.
He likes good food and a glass of wine every now and then, but he's also right at home in a local sports' bar with a beer and watching a game.
Strengths:
- Calm and supportive. When the world comes crashing down, he's a pillar to lean on.
- Cookies. All the cookies! He bakes cookies and brownies and, well, he just likes making all the sweet stuff. It got him Paul, after all.
- Ridiculous amounts of random little facts stored away in that noggin of his.
Weaknesses:
- Allergic to strawberries
- Comes across as sterner than he means, which makes him intimidating and that makes it harder for him to make friends.
- Claustrophobic, which he tries to hide but isn't too good at in places like elevators.
- Has trouble letting go. If something bothers him, he can't stop thinking it over. He can't stop trying to come up with a way he could have handled something better.
History: Roughly forty years ago, an American sergeant, Thomas, met a Dutch girl, Marianne, in Rotterdam and things happened. Dates, late nights, early mornings, flowers and fights and marriage and then a baby boy called Johan, after Marianne's father. They moved back to the States and Johan eventually got two younger sisters, Elisa and Laura.
They grew up moving around a lot, but it was all fine. Thomas was stern and big on discipline while Marianne at one point organised a strike by all the army spouses because she was bored. Johan and his sisters, thus, grew up in a loving home and taught to respect rules on the one hand and think for themselves on the other.
High school went pretty average for Johan. He was a member of the football team and dated a cheerleader one and off again for the final two years. She was a nice girl and Johan figured that this was what being in love was like and, well, just because he checked out guys didn't mean anything. He was sure everyone did that.
He moved on to college after briefly considering a career in the military but decided against that, partly because he was just beginning to figure out that he liked guys. Really, really liked guys. A lot more than girls and he figured that maybe then the army wasn't for him.
He was absolutely terrified of his dad finding out, all sorts of doomsday scenarios haunting through his head. Thomas was still as strict and career military as ever, after all. So while at college, he dated guys and went out and whenever he was at home he just did everything he usually did minus the dating guys thing.
It went pretty well. For the first year. The second year, he came home for Christmas, sorry to leave his boyfriend for the short while, and his father sat him down for a little one-on-one talk.
"Son," Thomas said, sitting at the dining room table. "You know you can tell me everything, right?"
Johan swallowed and nodded, having absolutely no idea where this was going.
"So next time you come here, I want you to bring your boyfriend along, y'hear? I wanna meet this guy." Johan got a pat on the back and that, really, was it. Life went on as it always had except the part where Johan was completely out of the closet now.
Boyfriends came and went and he became a teacher, teaching high school biology while passing on the life lessons he got from his mother and father. He lived and taught in Conway, Arkansas for a while, before Versi hit and after the epidemic was over, he moved away to Miami, feeling like he needed a change of scenery and, well, they needed a biology teacher down there. He settled into his new school nicely. He made new friends, quickly made it clear to his students that picking on the new teacher would not end well for him and, a year later, he met Paul.
Paul had just returned from a break he'd taken to learn how to control his shifting.
Johan likes to say that he seduced Paul with baking. The dark side has cookies, after all. He brought a few boxes of home baked cookies to the teacher's lounge for his birthday and that ended up with Paul and Johan talking. Which led to coffee. Which led to Johan asking Paul to dinner. They started dating and as time went on, the relationship became more and more serious and two years later, they moved in with each other.
It took a bit of searching, but they found a little house with a garden in a nice neighbourhood that they could actually afford on two teacher's salaries with still a bit of money left over to have some fun. They've been together for four years and are completely committed to each other.
