Name: Abel Smy
Nicknames: Titch
Date of birth/age: 10.06.1989 / 22
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Bisexual
Job: Attempting to run his own Shifter Right's Advocacy Service (it's not going well).
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance:
PB: Jim Parsons
Abel is very tall and very skinny, with long arms and legs. He often looks ungainly and clumsy, and is always tripping over his own feet. He's not conventionally handsome, although he has a sweet sort of charm to him.
Personality: Abel is, first and foremost, a loveable idiot. Ever since he was a young boy and watched his older brother getting all the attention from the lovely ladies, he decided he would be the perfect flirt and be just as popular. Sadly, he didn't have the natural aptitude for talking to women that Adam did, always a little bit dorky and too inclined to be the nice guy. After he realised he liked the company of men as well, when he was sixteen, he unfortunately discovered his flirtation skills were no better with his male partners than female ones.
Deep down he's a real softie, he likes to make other people smile and helping them through times of distress is one of the things that really drives him. He is endlessly loyal once he's made a friend and will be there for them through thick and thin, going out of his way to try and keep the peace and make everyone happy. He's a bit too trusting, and as such he often doesn't see the punch flying for his face until it's actually impacted and he's sat on the ground a bit dazed.
A bit of an idealist and a dreamer, he won't listen to anyone who says his Advocacy Service won't work and is devoted heart and soul to his cause. He believes passionately in the rights of both human and shifter alike. A bit of a workaholic, he can often throw too much of himself into whatever he is doing at the time, sometimes to his own detriment. He possesses something of a matyr complex, meaning he's always quick to put others before himself even to a high cost, which is obviously a foolish choice in some situations.
He adores knowledge in all shapes and forms, devouring everything from basic history to the most obscure quiz questions with an almost puppy-like enthusiasm. This isn't to say he's a genius, he doesn't retain more than half of what he reads, and unfortunately tends to retain the most useless snippets of information for the longest. His enthusiasm is never-ending and it's very rare to see him subdued, even if he is distressed then he tends to bottle it up and carry on as normal.
Abel absolutely idolises his older brother, and always has done. Going from being a devoted tiny shadow toddling after Adam, to being an equally devoted adult inviting himself around for dinner on regular occasions. He loves all his relations deeply and believes strongly in the importance of family. However, he's no saint, and when he has been angered or upset then he takes a very long time to forgive. Almost childish in his stubborn insistence on holding a grudge, though he will rarely act on it beyond a glare and some petulant mumbling.
He's not ashamed of being a shifter, far from it, but he rarely shifts himself. He's aware what a panic a carnivorous and dangerous animal would cause, and that's the last thing he wants to do. He likes to appear harmless, and pretty much IS harmless, and would have preferred an equally harmless looking shift. He's acutely aware that dangerous animals are one of the reasons that humans mistrust shifters, and so he does his best not to add to this by being very careful where he shifts and who is around.
Overall, he's an innocent idealist, with far too much enthusiasm and an overdeveloped sense of morality.
Strengths: Loyalty, well-mannered, amiable, driven.
Weaknesses: Bit of a doormat, stubborn, holds a grudge, clumsy, utterly useless in a physical confrontation.
History: Abel's parents are both very religious, and raised their two sons to have an equal passion for Christianity. They went to a fairly laid-back church, where worship and community were more important than the letter of the scripture, and they were taught to love everyone regardless of sexuality, colour or creed. Helen works as an elementary school teacher for third grade, and Joseph is a police office with the naroctics division. Both parents loved their sons dearly, and the whole family has a strong bond.
Adam, ten years Abel's senior, was something of a second father to him. From the first memory Abel has, the brother's have been closer than close. When he was of school-age he often used to follow Adam around like a shadow, and was never happier than when they were hanging out together. Adam was a bit of a playboy, though he never really went anywhere with it other than a few kisses and a lot of dates. Wanting to emulate his beloved hero, Abel tried to do the same and quickly found he was less suave and more silly.
He was relatively popular in school for his easy-going nature and enjoyment of making others laugh, and he was lucky in that his parents were supportive when the infection turned their youngest son into a shifter. Because of the support he got from his parents and brother, almost sheltering him, it hit him very hard the first time he witnessed real hatred just based on what he was. It spurred him into wanting to do something about it. Instead of going on into further education after high school, he spent his college fund on setting up a small business called the Shifter Advocacy Service (or S.A.S. - yes, he sees the joke in that and finds it childishly hilarious), which is intended to do the following:
-- Assist shifters in danger to find safe places to live and work
-- Attempt to fight to have laws instigated to prevent hate crimes
-- Organise meetings between extremist groups to try and diffuse the situations
-- Provide counselling for shifters who have been the victim of hate
-- Organise human/shifter activities
-- Try and spread information about the virus and how being a shifter isn't infectious, to try and stop the fear spread through misinformation.
He loves his work; however, for every shifter or human who admire what he does or donate some money towards the cause, there are many more who hate how blatant he's being about it. His office has been egged, graffiti'd and even picketed by protesters. His family (especially Adam) worry that Abel may be in danger, but he's blissfully naive to that real possibility and still believes he can make a difference. Whereas the reality is that he is just an idealistic dreamer and, while he might help a few people, his operation is far too small to really make a difference.
But hey, a man can dream!
