"Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win." - Stephen King
For my final art project, I drew a series of twelve fantastic beings that don't come from any mythology or book/show/etc., but my own mind. Most are based on my characters, who provided a good starting point for me to build these creatures on rather than making them out of the blue.
Lady Devil, Queen of Heaven (the page was too big to scan all the way DX)(WARNING: Bare lady boobs!)
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Devil.jpg
She is the Great Dragon and the Great Mother. She is a sadistic businesswoman who profits from the sins of mankind. Babies who die without baptism are cared for forever in her realm. I based her idea on a character of mine named Lucille, and her design is mostly inspired from a 17th century depiction of a lamia from The History of Four-Footed Beasts by Edward Topsell, then added the wings and tail of a dragon, which makes her resemble a sphinx as well.
Deep Earth God
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/DEG.jpg
He controls gravity and owns all gemstones. His movements, though rare, are the cause of earthquakes. The short appendage in the middle may be a deformed, injured, or diseases tentacle, or a phallus, or something else entirely. He is inspired from my character Hieronymus (the adult one), and the fat rolls are meant to evoke the body of a grub, which incubates underground.
Diananysus the Dual-Sexed Dog/God
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/DogGod.jpg
Ivy wraps the legs of this beast child, who is composed of human and canine parts, plus the antlers of a deer. It has ambiguous genitalia, but when the moon is full or new, it becomes a fully female being, and has a different personality. The name is an obvious portmanteau of Diana and Dionysus, a pair of respectively female and male Gerco-Roman gods of the wilderness. I based Diananysus on my character Lefty.
The Angel Apollo
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Apollo.jpg
He is the patron of Progress, body piercings, and plastic surgery. He urges humanity towards improvement, for only when we are perfect can he fly. However, since to be human is to be imperfect, the achievement of this goal will be attained only when we have ceased to be human and evolved in to something else. Until then, he is chained. I got the idea for him from my character Phoebus.
Kundalini Moth
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Moth.jpg
She is a sign of awakening to better things. Her eyes are still shut, but her third eye is open. Like a moth, she has no mouth, signifying her abstinence from earthly needs, which she has broken free of. A moth is the final form of a caterpillar after it has incubated in a cocoon, and the kundalini is a dormant force of human potential often represented as a snake coiled at the base of the spine, hence her moth wings and serpentine lower half. I got the idea for her from my character Sati, whom I play here.
Empty Cage
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Cage.jpg
A blank face on top of a skeleton opening its ribcage with a dead bird within. It came to me from the Tori Amos lyric You're just an empty cage, girl, if you kill the bird and signifies the hollowness of depression.
Sister Named Despair
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Despair.jpg
Incubates within The Empty Cage. May be the larval form of the Kundalini Moth. She is based on my character Delilah, who was in turn inspired from the worst aspects of my depression when I was a teenager, and whom I consider to be Sati's own little sister in terms of character ideas because I think Sati is who she could have become if she'd been born in modern times and gotten ten years of therapy and meds like Sati.
Imbriel, Angel of Tears and Queen of Rain
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Imbri.jpg
She is the angel of rain, and tears fall under her domain as “rain” from the eyes. This means that she comes to those who cry, and so she has seen much of the worst of the world of sadness...but also joy, for tears also come from that. She is a force of comfort and acceptance, and is meant to look like a much more beautiful and mature version of Sister Named Despair.
The First Hunger
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Hunger.jpg
Worshiped as a demon-god since time immemorial, deep caves are its cathedrals and live prepubescent girls are its preferred sacrifice, though it will feed on anything with blood. It has existed since before the universe began, though it did not always have this form, or any form. Within its belly is a portal to Hell, and anyone seeking to find it must sacrifice themselves to him and only hope that he swallows them whole and alive. His cults can still be found worldwide. The First Hunger has been with me since middle school, or even earlier. The first two legs are those of an emaciated horse (though with the hooves of a great goat), and the rest are those of a centipede. The body is like that of a snake or eel.
Swandrogyne
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/Swan.jpg
Genderless body with the head and wings of a swan. Name is an obvious portmanteau of 'swan' and 'androgyne'. Based on my character Gaspard, who is an androgynous swan shifter.
Prince of the 10th Planet (again, paper a bit too big for the scanner!)
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/10thPrince.jpg
His head is a black hole, which accounts for the lack of light on his planet, of which there are very few inhabitants. Crystals, however, grow there in abundance, as they also do on his body. I got the idea for him not from a character of mine, but from Prince Diamond of Sailor Moon. He was and is my favorite villain from the series because his attempted sexual assault on Sailor Moon scared my childhood self in a visceral and realistic way that none of the other bad guys did, and that made him fascinating to me.
Star Being (Male)
i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/Lilabella/2012%20Art/StarBeing.jpg
Composed of stardust, these beings have personalities best described as cold fire. They are the guardians of constellations, and come to Earth in the form of shooting stars to mate with humans, though no offspring can be had from such a union. This was inspired from Kokabel, a fallen angel from the Book of Enoch that I made into a character for myself.
