Name: Joana Vega
Nicknames: Jo, Jazz
Date of birth/age: 2nd April, 1986 (Twenty-six)
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Lesbian
Job: Kinda floats between jobs. Has fluctuated between bartending, working desk at a tattoo shop, and is in and out of unemployment at times.
Degrees/Permits: High school diploma & bartending certification.
Languages Spoken: English and Spanish.
Human or shifter: Shifter
Appearance:
PB: Omahyra Mota
Lanky and lean, she stands at an above-average 5'7" tall and weighs in at or around 140 lbs. most of the time. The woman has some muscle on her, but she's not super athletic or buff by any means, simply toned. Jo has a mess of short, spiky black hair that never does seem fully tamed and she enjoys fauxhawks and other boyish cuts. She's a dusky tan skin tone due to her mixed heritage and has rather sharp, chiseled features, especially in her face. Her eyes are a dark chocolate brown, heavy-lidded and only accentuated by the dark circles that have begun to line under them. Notable features are the tattoos that she has running across her arms, with some hidden under her clothes and found on her left side and hip, her right shoulder, and the back of her neck. She has gauges in her ears as her only piercings.
As for clothing, Jo can play upon her natural androgyny well, and most often dresses on the more masculine side. She can sway towards more feminine dress at times, but you will normally find her in jeans or shorts, graphic teeshirts or button-ups, sneakers, and a variety of odd necklaces or wrist-cuffs/bracelets. When she tries feminine, she may end up in a blouse or, rarely, a skirt, if you can convince her. Jo doesn't try that hard to look fashionable unless she has a reason to.
Personality: Intense is the first thing people get from Joana upon first meeting. She has a way of carrying herself, an odd mix of confident and laid back that shows a streak of cocky pride. If she's not idly watching people she's smirking and plotting something. Jo is friendly, though, when she's given the chance, and she does keep a close friend-group and isn't afraid to be social and talk to others. She's fairly chill; not much can really get a rile out of Jo, but when it does she has a temper and arrogance that can flare up and cloud her judgement. Jo isn't above defending herself and getting in peoples' faces for scorning her or those that she cares about. This caused many a brawl or unsavory experience in her teen years. Many experiences have gained her the label of a 'delinquent', one thing that makes her the most bitter. Rules and oppressive people are things she doesn't always get along with.
Highly independent, Jo may seem lazy or a slacker due to her inability to hold down jobs and her lack of education, but she's sharp-witted in her own right and does work hard at the tasks that she sets herself to. She simply has a hard time focusing on one thing at a time, losing interest in tasks that don't fuel her brain or that are unique and interesting. Jo likes to take risks but she's not stupid; she won't jump into things that are dangerous, but she does enjoy spontaneity. She can't plan well and likes to do things at the drop of a hat, taking life day-to-day. Jo may not always be the most positive, with her ups and downs emotionally, but she does what she can. She craves stability, as much as it's really hard to come by. She uses her gut feeling and impulse to guide her, and it hasn't failed her that much... yet.
Hobby-wise, she can be found listening to music often, trawling clubs or bars, out on the street taking walks or running/keeping fit, sneaking into movies, getting into trouble, and drawing. The woman loves dub-step, punk, hip-hop, or electronic music, any kind of food, good booze, drawing and sketching, sleeping, and watching crime shows.
Strengths:
+ Street-smart. Along with good general common-sense, Jo knows the ins and outs of the city fairly well, and she's pretty good at directions, also knowing the right people to talk to and who to avoid.
+ Adaptable. Whatever is thrown at Jo, she can pretty easily adjust and conquer on a step-by-step basis.
+ Witty. She can get you to laugh with her dry humor, as blunt and sarcastic as it is.
+ Hard-worker. Well, when she wants to be. She'll see a task out that she's committed to til the very end.
+ Loyal. When she likes you, you have a friend for life.
+ Durable. She can roll with the punches and deal her own out pretty well. Comes with street-fighting.
Weaknesses:
- Temper. When she's pushed enough, she has no problem using her fists instead of her words. Though her words are pretty colorful, and her swearing can make a sailor blush.
- Vices. She smokes often (cigarettes and occasionally weed) and drinks socially; being a social person... this is also fairly often.
- Metabolism. A blessing and a curse, she has a fairly fast metabolism that keeps her slim, but she has to eat a lot to keep that up. This also causes her to have a severe lack of sleep and she's usually pretty tired.
- Tease. She plays around with girls and has been known to flirt and occasionally sleep around, but she does at least have standards... sorta.
- Lonely. As much as Jo tries to play 'lone wolf' and act like she's alright on her own, she's lonely and can be dragged down by bouts of festering depression.
History: Coming from a hard-working lower middle class family, Joana has quite a few siblings and is the second eldest of six, with an older sister, two younger sisters, and two younger brothers. Her parents were immigrants to the United States as children, giving her a mixed heritage of Dominican and Puerto Rican, born herself in Florida. She does know Spanish fluently due to this and sometimes uses a mix of it and English when speaking, though she has no accent. Her family life was strict but close, with many traditional values, from a very Catholic family. Early on Joana was a tomboy and a troublemaker, outspoken yet smart, with some discipline problems but an eager mind to learn and grow. She was very close to her parents, especially her father, and helped to wrangle her younger siblings when they were each born. She felt some pressure to follow along her older sister's footsteps since she was gifted, excelling in school, and where Jo was never a prodigy, she was a decent B student in her own right and tried her hardest. She overall was a good kid on a good path, though it didn't last through public school.
Late middle school was when Jo became a bit more rebellious, pushing boundaries and delving into trouble. She fell into a bad crowd through peer pressure in high school and slacked off on her studies for parties and late nights out. Fights happened more often, including one instance where she was suspended. This strained Jo's relationship with her parents, who tried hard to tame down the wilder girl, and that only fueled further arguments and fights between them. When Jo realized her sexuality she kept it secret as best as she could, not wanting to further weaken the already lessened familial bonds. It was in her senior year that her parents would find out in a rather jarring manner, however, walking in on her making out with her then-girlfriend. At first denying it, and with several more fights, her parents simply could not accept the uncontrollable young woman that Joana had become, and as soon as she graduated high school they presented her with her belongings in suitcases and told her to leave. She hasn't spoken to them, or any of her siblings since.
This was the one event that would flip Jo's world on its head, having not expected them, of all people, to kick her out. Her immature ways and her childhood immediately ended at seventeen, forcing Jo to grow up all at once to make ends meet. College and any other bright future was, at that point, out of the question. She stayed with friends where she could, trying hard to earn money from various ways (some... not very legal) before she finally landed herself a mediocre job making ends meet. Job-hopping and doing odd work is the way she paid the bills early on until she gained enough experience and networking to step up somewhat, getting certification to bartend. When she doesn't do that, she works at a tattoo parlor at the front desk whenever she can get hours, her friends there hooking her up and helping her with extra cash. She's admittedly poor, but she is proud enough of what she's earned, and keeps striving for better things. Her biggest dreams are to learn to do tattooing and to make a name for herself artistically, and at least end up somewhere full-time.
Joana knew of the febris versipellis pandemic when it was spoken of on the news, one of those infected during the peak of the disease's spread. She thought little of it when she survived, though the first time she shifted into a praying mantis certainly wasn't one of her more shining moments. It's been a bit of an ego blow, to have one more thing to distance her from others and she hates feeling so weird; it doesn't help that, of all things, she had to end up a pint-sized bug of terror. Oh well. Just another thing she'll cope with, as she's managed to survive this long mostly unscathed. Shifting has simply become another thing to adapt to, so long as it doesn't get in the way.
