Gabe is a young man of average height with dark brown hair and brown eyes. Barring special occasions, he dresses for comfort over style and is just as likely to wear a hat as he is to actually style his hair. Gabe is lean but in fairly good shape. He has a long, thin scar on his hip from a childhood accident. Gabe’s “condition” has had one physical effect on him so far; he has black-lined orange markings similar to the ones found on his animal form. These markings have appeared on his torso and shoulders. He does his best to cover them and is highly reluctant to allow anyone outside a select few to see them.
Personality: While no longer the extremely shy and introverted boy he was as a child, Gabe is still a bit of a wallflower. He is friendly but extremely private, the sort of person who has more acquaintances than friends. He dislikes conflict and tries to avoid it when he can. He hates being the center of attention and does his best to avoid anything that will bring attention to himself. He tends to place others’ well-being above his own and, while he will be the first to offer to help someone else, he will rarely ask for help from others. An avid reader since he was a child, Gabe is as likely to have read a seminal work of literature as the latest trashy romance. Due to his experiences during his brief time at college, Gabe has developed a deep dislike for snobbery, both literary and social. Ever since his first shift, Gabe has become increasingly nocturnal, sleeping in late and staying up for most of the night.
Strengths: Determined. Once Gabe has set his mind to doing something, he does everything in his power to do it. All the work he has done to get his shifting under control has shown just how strong his resolve can be.
Loyal. Gabe can be difficult to get close to, but once you are, he will do almost anything for you.
Sewing. He learned this from his aunt. During the time where he was trying to get his shifting under control, he mangled more clothes then he or his family could replace. It was much more practical to patch or fix what he had ruined and it gave him something to focus on besides his condition.
Gabe is a pretty good cook. He discovered his talent for it while working at his mother's restaurant.
Weaknesses: Stubborn. It is hard to change his mind once it’s been made. He also holds grudges and it is hard for him to just let things go.
He has difficulty opening up to others. He tends to try and deal with everything by himself instead of asking for help/support when he needs it.
Low self-esteem. He has always suffered from it and the events of the last five years have not helped.
Sheltered. He grew up in a small town and had never left his home state before coming to Miami. He isn’t so much naive as he is inexperienced.
He suffers from disorientation after shifting from one form to the other. While this period of disorientation only last a couple of seconds during a controlled shifted, it last for much longer during an involuntary shift thanks not only to the shock of the sudden shift but to the extreme differences between his human and lionfish forms. He also has difficultly retaining information he has received while in his lionfish form. His human mind/senses has difficulty processing what he experienced while in his fish form. He could probably improve this in time, but for now he prefers to just stay in human form as much as he can.
He has started having nightmares about suffocating. These have gotten progressively worse as time has passed. They started soon after his first shift.
History: Gabriel was born and raised in a small town in southwest Virginia. The son of a nurse and a chef, Gabe grew up in a comfortable and mostly stable home. Thanks to their parents’ long work hours, Gabe and his brother Peter spent a large chunk of their early years with their aunt and her children. Peter, who was two years older then his younger brother, had just begun school when their sister Alice was born.
Gabe was not happy to go from the loving and welcoming environment of his aunt’s house to the cold and unknown terrain known as school. Compared to his boisterous brother, Gabe was almost eerily quiet and shy. He had difficulty making friends with kids outside his brother and cousins. Some of the other kids picked on him for being “weird”. He was not miserable at school but he was not happy either.
Things began to change for Gabe when he started fourth grade. His teacher that year assigned everyone a desk and Gabe ended up sitting next a boy named Devin. Devin was friendly and outgoing and would chat incessantly with the quieter boy. By the end of the school year, the two boys were friends. To Gabe’s parents’ relief, Devin was able to get Gabe out of the house and had him interacting with the world in a way he hadn’t before. The following year, the owner of the restaurant Gabe’s mother worked at announced his plan to retire. After a long, sometimes loud discussion with her husband, she offered to buy the restaurant. Once the restaurant changed hands, his mother did her best to improve the place she had come to love. As Gabe and his siblings grew older, they began to help their mother out at her restaurant. Gabe worked as a bus boy before moving on to the kitchen, where he worked as a dish washer and would occasionally fill in if a cook was unavailable or had to leave early.
After graduating high school, Gabe was at a loss. While he enjoyed working at the restaurant, he wasn’t sure if he wanted to work there for the rest of his life. Besides, Peter was pretty much guaranteed take over after their mother retired (which was probably for the best since Peter had the best business sense out of the three siblings). Thanks to the horror stories his father loved to share, Gabe had no interest in any job that would take him within walking distance of a hospital. It did not help that Devin was attending an out-of-state college so the two friends were only able to see each other when Devin came home for the holidays and summer break.
After taking a year to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, Gabe started taking some classes at a nearby community college. While he still was not sure what he wanted to do, he at least felt like he was doing something with his life. Then the Versi epidemic hit. Gabe was the only one in his family to contract the virus. At first, it did not seem like a big deal; he was sick, he recovered, he went back to class. However, the stories of what happened to survivors of Versi soon started to spread. The ability to shapeshift into an animal—it was hard to believe that such a thing could be possible. Gabe’s family did their best to keep an eye on him, just in case.
Even with his family watching out for him, Gabe was lucky to survive his first shift. He was home when it happened; one minute he was watching television, the next he literally a fish out of water. Fortunately, Alice was home and quickly scooped him up and dropped him in their father’s aquarium. Unfortunately, this act placed her in the hospital for several days. Gabe had turned into a lionfish, a spiny venomous fish.
The next three years of Gabe’s life were spent mastering his new “quirk”. He rarely left the house for the first year and a half. Once he felt that he had some control over his shifting to his other form, he started working in the restaurant again. He never felt comfortable with going back to college, at least not that college. Too many of the people he interacted with there knew about his illness and Gabe was afraid that one of them would realize the reason for his long absence. It wasn’t that Gabe was ashamed of what had happened to him, he just didn’t want people to treat him differently thanks to something that could have happened to anyone. Gabe began to grow restless. His life appeared to be at a standstill once again. One day he received a call from his cousin Abigail. She needed someone to housesit for her while she was out of the country on business. Seeing a chance to maybe get his life back on track, Gabe headed out for Miami.
